Development and Peace — Supporting the Peasant Movement

Development and Peace—Caritas Canada’s fall campaign under the theme “Reaping our Rights” takes up the torch of due diligence. The aim is to get the Canadian government to build “an economy based on justice and solidarity, ensuring that the problems facing farmers are no longer caused or multiplied by Canadian corporations.”

This time, Development and Peace—Caritas Canada is inviting its members and the public to sign action cards outlining the key elements of this law, in order to ensure that Canadian companies respect human rights and the environment.

The Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM) regularly take part in campaigns run by this non-governmental organization (NGO). This autumn, posters were put up in homes and workplaces, and documents were circulated along with the action card for signature. At the end of the campaign, a person in charge will collect all the cards and send them to Development and Peace.

The NGO’s approach is based on the experience and resilience of farmers and farmers’ movements, who suffer the impact of loopholes in current legislation that deprive them of effective recourse.

Members and the general public have access to a range of resources to help them understand the current situation in farming communities, where land grabbing and environmental destruction threaten agricultural production and livelihoods. The campaign launch webinar with guest speakers is also available.
