A passing of the torch marked by gratitude, joy, and simplicity was the spirit of the celebration held on August 27 at Saint-Jean-l’Évangéliste Cathedral, marking the beginning of the episcopal ministry of Bishop Martin Laliberté, P.M.E., the new Bishop of the Diocese of Saint-Jean—Longueuil.

Inspired by the biblical motto “If you knew the gift of God,” the celebration invited everyone to “welcome, with gratitude, the gifts the Lord continues to bestow upon His Church,” including that of a new shepherd called to accompany the diocesan community.

Giving Thanks and Welcoming a New Bishop

he evening was an opportunity both to thank Bishop Claude Hamelin for his dedication and to warmly welcome his successor.

Speaking in five languages, Bishop Laliberté expressed his happiness at being able to contribute to a “vibrant Church.” He hopes to continue the synodal journey and foster collaboration and dialogue, building on the work of his predecessor.

A delegation from the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM) attended the celebration, including Sisters Denise Riel, Lorraine Mongeon, Jacqueline Longtin, Michèle Gouin, Jacqueline Boudreau, and Françoise Bernard.

“We had a wonderful time of sharing, warmly thanking Bishop Hamelin and joyfully welcoming Bishop Laliberté,” said Sr. Lorraine Mongeon.

A Church That Reaches Out to People

Despite the solemn nature of the occasion, the spirit of closeness and simplicity left a lasting impression. At the end of Mass, the bishops and members of the clergy took time to meet and speak with those in attendance.

For Sr. Lorraine, this gesture perfectly captured the atmosphere of the evening. Seeing them mingle with people and take time for conversation was a meaningful expression of the spirit of communion that brings the diocese together.

Bishop Laliberté’s parents, parishioners, clergy members, consecrated persons, and guests from various regions shared in the celebration, hosted by Michel Bouthot. Others followed the event online.

Combining gratitude for the journey so far, with confidence in the future, the celebration offered a beautiful glimpse of a Church moving forward, called to continue its mission together.
