Since 1973, World Environment Day, led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), has mobilized millions of people around the globe to address the most pressing environmental challenges of our time.
In 2026, the focus is on climate change and the urgent need for action. Under the banner #ActNowForClimate, the global campaign encourages individuals, communities, and organizations to move from awareness to action.
The message is clear: the question is no longer whether climate change is real, but how we choose to respond—and how quickly we implement the solutions needed to address it.
Warning Signs That Affect Us All
Scientific evidence continues to underscore the urgency of action:
- The years from 2015 to 2025 were the eleven hottest years ever recorded.
• By 2050, glaciers could disappear from one-third of the sites currently monitored worldwide.
• Droughts are projected to affect more than three-quarters of the world’s population by the middle of the century.
These changes are already impacting access to water, food, healthcare, and safety for millions of people around the world.
A Call That Resonates with SNJM Values
For many years, the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM) have taken concrete steps to reduce their environmental footprint and promote more responsible and sustainable lifestyles.
This commitment is rooted in the principles of integral ecology outlined in Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’ and reflected in their participation in the Laudato Si’ Action Platform. This approach recognizes the close relationship between environmental protection, social justice, and respect for human dignity.
Taking Action for the Future
This year, Azerbaijan is hosting the global celebrations for World Environment Day. Activities and awareness initiatives will take place around the world to inspire action and mobilize communities.
