Celebrating Quebec Authors and Inspiring a Love of Reading
Every year on August 12, readers are invited to take a simple yet meaningful step: buy a book by a Quebec author. Launched in 2014 by authors Patrice Cazeault and Amélie Dubé, this initiative has grown into a beloved cultural tradition that celebrates the work of Quebec writers—French-speaking, English-speaking, and Indigenous alike.
The day is also an opportunity to discover new voices, visit an independent bookstore, meet local authors, and inspire young people to experience the joy of reading.
Reading to Learn, Grow, and Share
Across Quebec, many independent bookstores host author events in a welcoming atmosphere reminiscent of literary festivals. Readers are also encouraged to share their favourite books, recent discoveries, and recommendations, helping showcase the richness and diversity of Quebec literature.
As the founders of the initiative explain:
“Quebec is home to so many extraordinary writers. There are worlds waiting to be explored, words that make us dream, challenge us, surprise us, move us to tears, or fill us with laughter. Carefully chosen words that allow us to experience something precious and unique. Once again this year, I’m buying a book by a Quebec author. Who’s with us?”
Giving the Gift of Reading
For the past several years, the Foundation for Literacy has marked this occasion by promoting its Reading Is a Gift, presented by Québecor.
People are invited to purchase a new children’s book by a Quebec author for children aged 0 to 12 and donate it at one of the many participating collection points. The books are then distributed to families with limited access to reading materials, helping children discover the pleasure of reading from an early age.
An Initiative That Reflects the SNJM Mission
This initiative resonates deeply with the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM). Since their founding, education, literacy, and access to knowledge have been central to their mission. Encouraging reading, supporting young people in their educational journey, and promoting culture are meaningful ways to foster personal growth while helping build a more educated, open, and caring society.
