Violence and Bullying Prevention Week in Quebec

Building Safe and Caring School Environments

From March 23 to 29, Quebec marks the Week for the Prevention of Violence and Bullying in Schools. This initiative aims to promote respectful, harmonious, and civic-minded relationships in order to support the well-being of students and school staff alike.

Launched for the first time in 2025, this week provides a collective opportunity to reflect on current practices, strengthen skills, and encourage concrete actions that foster a safe and positive school climate.

A Commitment Sustained Throughout the Year

Beyond a one-time awareness campaign, this initiative is part of a broader 2025–2030 concerted action plan designed to prevent violence and bullying in Quebec schools. Educational institutions are implementing mandatory action plans that include reporting mechanisms, rapid intervention measures, and structured follow-ups—including the prevention of cyberbullying.

The Government of Quebec provides students, families, and school staff with numerous resources and tools to promote collaboration (in French only) between schools, families, and communities. This comprehensive approach recognizes that prevention requires sustained and collective engagement.

The Champlain Teachers’ Union Initiative: “Put an X on Violence”

Among the organizations supporting this week, the Champlain Teachers’ Union has launched, for the first time, the campaign “Put an X on Violence in Schools!” in support of the Ministry of Education’s efforts.

Approximately 13,500 purple X pins have been distributed to teachers and support staff affiliated with the union in the Patriotes, Marie-Victorin, and Vallée-des-Tisserands school service centers. Visual campaign materials are also being displayed throughout the Montérégie region, including on billboards, buses, and in schools.

The purple X carries strong symbolic meaning. The X is commonly associated with voting, but also with prohibition, refusal, and protection—a clear statement saying “no” to violence. The color purple is widely used in awareness campaigns addressing various forms of violence, particularly those affecting women, seniors, and LGBTQ+ communities. Together, these elements form a powerful symbol of solidarity and commitment.

A Cause That Reflects the Educational Mission of the SNJM

Having worked primarily in education, the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM) remain deeply committed to the well-being of young people. Promoting a safe and caring school environment contributes not only to academic success but also to the overall development of children and adolescents.

Preventing violence and bullying is a concrete step toward building environments where every young person can thrive. This week calls for a collective effort to wear the purple X proudly and affirm our shared opposition to all forms of violence.
