International Day of Zero Waste
Reducing Food Waste to Protect the Planet
On March 30, the International Day of Zero Waste invites citizens, organizations, and governments to reflect on the impacts of our waste production and to adopt more sustainable practices.
Organized jointly by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and UN-Habitat, this day aims to strengthen waste management worldwide and encourage more responsible patterns of consumption and production.
The International Day of Zero Waste was officially proclaimed on December 14, 2022, when the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 77/161. Since then, it has been observed every year on March 30.
A Global Waste Crisis
Waste management has become a major challenge for the planet. Each year, humanity generates between 2.1 and 2.3 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste. Without significant action, this amount could reach 3.8 billion tonnes by 2050.
Waste pollution has many consequences. It threatens human health, costs the global economy hundreds of billions of dollars, and contributes to the triple planetary crisis identified by the United Nations: climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

2026 Theme: Food Waste
The 2026 edition focuses on food waste, a widespread yet largely preventable issue.
In 2022, nearly 1 billion tonnes of food were wasted worldwide—about one fifth of all food available to consumers.
Food waste is also a significant climate issue. It accounts for up to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, nearly five times the emissions of the aviation sector, and contributes to 14% of global methane emissions.
Reducing these losses is one of the most accessible ways to address climate change. Zero-waste approaches promote prevention, more efficient use of resources, and changes in production and consumption patterns.
A Shared Responsibility
The International Day of Zero Waste reminds us that everyone can help reduce their environmental footprint. Simple actions can contribute to the transition toward a more sustainable future:
- Planning purchases more carefully
- Making better use of leftover food
- Composting or prioritizing reuse
🌍♻️This day encourages us to reflect on our habits and to take practical steps to reduce waste and protect the planet.
