On July 29, 1976, during the 26th General Chapter of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM), Sr. Hermance Baril was chosen to become Superior General. She had previously been elected provincial superior of the canonical province of Outremont in 1972.
It was during his second term that an extraordinary event took place for the entire Congregation: the beatification of Marie-Rose Durocher on May 23, 1982, by Pope John Paul II.
