On July 29, 1976, during the 26th General Chapter of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM), Sister Hermance Baril was elected Superior General. She had previously served as Provincial Superior of the Outremont Canonical Province since 1972.
Her leadership came at a pivotal moment in the Congregation’s history, marked by profound changes within both the Church and society. During her second term as Superior General, the SNJM experienced one of the most significant milestones in their history: the beatification of Marie-Rose Durocher on May 23, 1982, by Pope John Paul II.
