A Musical Journey Through Latin America with Classical Guitar

Return to news

Close your eyes, imagine the sound of flowing water, picture a condor soaring across the sky… These were just some of the images brought to life during a recital by guitarist Michel Beauchamp, held in the chapel of Maison Jésus-Marie (MJM). Far more than a classical guitar concert, this performance took the audience on a musical journey through the landscapes and cultures of Latin America.

A Seven-String Guitar Opens Up New Musical Horizons

Michel Beauchamp, the nephew of Sr. Marthe-Gisèle Beauchamp, presented a program of a dozen pieces, carefully selected for their melodic richness and evocative sounds.

From Mexico to Brazil, with stops in various Latin American countries, the guitarist introduced the audience to a wonderful variety of rhythms, moods, and musical influences.

His mastery of the seven-string classical guitar captivated listeners, as did the sensitivity of his performance. At times gentle and soothing, at others lively and rhythmic, the melodies invited everyone to let their imagination wander to distant places.

When Music Takes the Imagination on a Journey

What made this recital particularly special was the manner in which Michel Beauchamp introduced each composition.

Beyond sharing information about the composers and their countries of origin, he offered little listening cues to spark the audience’s curiosity. At one moment, he invited listeners to “hear the flowing water”; at another, to imagine “a condor flying overhead…”

These vivid images added another dimension to the musical works. The audience could appreciate not only the beauty of the melodies but also the images and emotions they inspired.

It was a simple and especially enjoyable way to experience music from a different perspective.

A Musical Tradition That Lives On Among the SNJMs

This concert reflects the longstanding history of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM), whose commitment to artistic and musical education has influenced generations of students.

As founders of the École de musique Vincent-d’Indy, the SNJMs helped train many musicians who went on to pursue careers in Quebec and internationally.

Today, Maison Jésus-Marie continues this legacy in its own way by welcoming accomplished artists and emerging talents to perform recitals for an attentive and knowledgeable audience.

A wonderful reminder that music remains a special way to discover, share, and experience a sense of wonder.
