World Museum Day

The creation of this day, which has been celebrated since 1977, is intended to send the message that museums are an “important means of cultural exchange and enrichment of cultures. Museums also promote “mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.

Each year, several events and activities are organized on the day itself, around the date and even during a week. Last year, no less than 37,000 museums in some 156 countries participated in this International Museum Day (IMD).

Since 2020, ICOM (International Council of Museums) has supported several goals from the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With the theme “Museums, Sustainability and Well-Being” in 2023, the focus is on the following goals in 2023:

– 3 – Global health and well-being

– 13 – Climate action

– 15 – Life on Earth

An invitation is extended to the entire population to come together and enjoy the museum facilities in their region. It is an opportunity to become aware of the potential of museums for sustainable development, well-being, collective enrichment and openness to diverse cultures.
