Rendez-vous de la Francophonie

A Month to Celebrate the French Language

The Rendez-vous de la Francophonie (RVF) take place throughout the month of March, with the goal of promoting the French language and its many expressions across Canada. They are part of the activities surrounding International Francophonie Day, celebrated worldwide on March 20.

2026: “Activate Your Francophonie”

For their 28th edition, the RVF have chosen the theme “Activate Your Francophonie,” an invitation to experience, enrich, and share Francophone culture in all its forms. To help carry this message, two committed public figures have been named co-spokespersons:

  • Katherine Plouffe, professional basketball player
  • Mehdi Cayenne, singer-songwriter

This theme highlights a dynamic Francophonie, rooted in everyday life and open to the world.

A Francophonie in Motion

Activating one’s Francophonie means taking action, reaching out to others, and creating opportunities to come together. Whether through sports activities, cultural outings, creative workshops, community celebrations, or outdoor events, each initiative becomes a way to affirm that French is a living, inclusive, and meaningful language.

It is also a way to engage with one’s community, encourage intergenerational dialogue, and recognize the cultural diversity that enriches Canadian Francophonie. When activated, Francophonie is expressed through varied accents, traditions, and shared stories.

A Rich and Inclusive Program

The wide range of activities offered reflects the vitality of Francophone communities. The national program includes performances, book clubs, school activities, and film screenings, in collaboration with the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). For the 21st consecutive year, the NFB is making several French-language films, documentaries, and animated works available free of charge.

The RVF also place a strong emphasis on inclusion, highlighting the contributions of Canadians of all backgrounds and recognizing the millennia-long presence and contributions of Indigenous Peoples.

Resources Throughout the Year

Alongside the RVF, many organizations work year-round to promote Francophonie. The Canadian Association for French Language Education offers educational tools and resources designed to help young people give a meaningful place to the French language and Francophone culture in their lives. (French only)
