National Nursing Week

Recognizing a Vital Commitment at the Heart of Healthcare

Each year, National Nursing Week highlights the essential role of nurses in our societies. In 2026, it takes place from May 11 to 17 across Canada under the theme “The Power of Nurses to Transform Health.”

This theme underscores the vital contribution of nursing professionals to improving care, driving innovation, and advocating for a patient-centered approach. Through their dedication, expertise, and ability to mentor new generations, nurses actively help shape the future of healthcare systems.

In Quebec: Showcasing Skills in Action

In Quebec, the Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec (OIIQ) marks the week from May 10 to 16 with the theme “Your Skills in Action” («Vos compétences à l’œuvre»).

This initiative highlights the richness and diversity of the skills nurses bring to their work every day: clinical care, listening, support, prevention, and education. Behind every action lies valuable expertise—often discreet, yet essential.

A Profession at the Heart of Everyday Life

In hospitals, community settings, schools, and homes, nurses are present at every stage of life. Their role goes far beyond medical care—they provide comfort, compassion, and hope.

This week of recognition is a reminder of their invaluable contribution, both locally and around the world.

An Inspiring Legacy

National Nursing Week coincides with the birthday of Florence Nightingale (May 12, 1820), a pioneer of modern nursing and the use of data in healthcare.

It also includes Indigenous Nurses Day, an opportunity to recognize the essential role of Indigenous nurses within their communities.

A Time to Say Thank You

During this week, everyone is invited to express their gratitude to healthcare professionals. A kind word, a gesture, or a simple act of appreciation can make a meaningful difference.

Let us take the time to recognize these women and men who care for others each day with skill, dedication, and compassion.
