A Tool for Building a Culture of Peace
Proclaimed in 2011 by the United Nations (UN), the International Day of Friendship highlights the power of friendship to bring together peoples, cultures, and individuals. This day encourages the building of bridges between communities and nations as a way to prevent conflict by addressing its root causes.
Lasting peace depends largely on bonds of solidarity, mutual understanding, and respect. That is why the UN calls on governments, institutions, community organizations, and every individual to engage in initiatives that promote intercultural dialogue, reconciliation, and social cohesion.
Young people—today’s and tomorrow’s leaders—play a key role in this effort. Through community, educational, and multicultural activities, this day aims to raise their awareness, strengthen their commitment to peace, and promote an inclusive vision of the world where everyone has a place.
July 30 is also a call to concrete action: reaching out to someone who feels lonely, speaking out against bullying, creating spaces for dialogue, or simply telling a friend they matter. These are simple gestures—but deeply meaningful.
By supporting the principles of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace and the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World (2001–2010), this day is part of a global movement that promotes peaceful coexistence through kindness and cooperation.
Ultimately, the International Day of Friendship is more than a celebration of personal bonds—it is an invitation to cultivate friendship as a cornerstone of a more peaceful and united world.
